University Registration Day, UMS.
OMG! It's been how many years since the last time I met you here?
Hi bloggers!
So, previously I have shared with you guys about Matriculation Life, right? Well, this time imma talk about University Life.
Reading through this, I'm quite sure that you must be a university student to be, right? Well, if it isn't right, pardon me.
I'm Hisyam. I am now in my third year at the University of Malaysia Sabah. I am studying Food Technology and Bioprocessing, in the faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP). Well, unlike in matriculation, I changed my program but this time I didn't, although I hesitated for a while, but luckily I stayed. University life is a roller coaster of emotion, every day is a tough day. I just have no idea how did I survived four semesters, and so! today Imma shares a little or more piece of my experiences. Why, how, and where I started. Well, of course, I'm still learning, but why not right?
I put this random pic here for the thumbnail, hoho.
1. First-day student registration.
3rd of September 2018, I went to UMS for student registration. During the registration day, everything went very smoothly because I have settled down everything earlier through online registration, they called it e-Daftar. So, you wouldn't have to spend long hours queuing up just to pay for the fees and registration. Trust me, you want to settle everything at the e-Daftar because there will be so many people who purposely refused to settle there and they ended up swimming in sweat. If you do the e-Daftar all you gotta do is to check-in, get the key to your room and your Cenderamata (Corporate shirt, Minggu Suai Mesra tag, so-called sports T-shirt.) Well, at this checkpoint you want to be very clear and assertive about your size. Many of my friends were given Shirts of larger sizes and they ended up not really liking it. Fortunately, I got mine in S size, and I loved it. After this point, you're good to go. Now you need to do is to bring all your goods to your room and settle down.
I quickly settled everything down (thanks to the e-Daftar) and got my Cenderamata.
During my first year, I was a resident of Kampung E. UMS has three on-campus residency colleges: Kampung E, Tun Mustapha, and Tun Fuad. Usually, for a first-year local student, you will reside in the on-campus residency college, usually Kampung E. Well, there are many pros and cons to being a resident of Kampung E, and it all depends on your preferences. For me, I prefer to stay in a bigger space with fewer people, which isn't very Kampung E.
Kampung E.
Where to start??? Kampung E has so many to offer when it comes to food. Got, Uncle Bob, Cool City, vegetarian foods, bakso, and delicious soups to street vendor foods. They have the tastiest food in UMS. BUT! I don't really understand why four people are fitted into a very small room. I have the pictures, and you can see them down below. It's not like I don't like sharing room with others, but, personally, that space isn't meant for four people. I had a lot of conflicts back then with my roommates, and I think none of us were wrong. It's just because we were a little sensitive because of the room condition. The air ventilation is not good. At night, it's very hot. You can't keep the windows open at night, because of the mosquitoes, and if one person farts or just came back from doing sports everyone in the room will choke. A very small misunderstanding may lead to a huge dispute and it is a mentally unhealthy environment for students, from my personal perspectives and experiences. Anyhow, I still managed to escape Kampung E because in my third semester, my application for Kolej Tun Mustapha LULUSSSSSS!! I was super glad, the environment, the atmosphere there is calmer and breathable, and I am just so grateful. I spent my second year in Kolej TM and I will also be spending my third year in TM if Misses Corona leaves earlier. Of course, College TM has its own downside, the food there is not really appetizing, and has 10 times lesser variety than Kampung E. That is why I said earlier, it's up to your preferences. Do you prefer a comfortable night? or quick access to so many foods? It's your call. Can you choose which residential college? Absolutely NO! I managed to get Kolej TM because my application for on-campus residential college was denied, but I did rayuan and have to stay outside the campus for over a month before my re-application accepted, and that eventually brought me to Kolej TM for my second year.
*every year, students have to apply for a residential college. and if you are unfortunate enough, your application might get denied. BUT! you still can appeal your application, and that will take over a month before you can walk-in for the on-campus residential college, in the meantime, you have to find a place to stay, because as I said the process will take over a month, of course for a reason.
These are the real picture of how the room looks like. The bed and the study table gaps is just like one and a half step apart and its quite narrow. Can't relate.
Back to the track, we are still at the "registration-day". After settling down, you should get ready for the Minggu Suai Mesra or they called it MSM. I didn't experience anything unhealthy or uncomfortable. The seniors were very kind and helpful. Mostly, we spent many hours in the Dewan Canselor. Tips: You want to bring a jacket along with you because they will blast off the air-cond, and you don't wanna die. Other than that, everything was fine for me. I could not comment much on MSM as it may be different years to years. Just follow the tentative given to you. Okay?
This is how my matric card looks like and behind it, is the MSM tag I mentioned earlier. Next to it was taken when everyone in the DC waved their flashlight and it was beautiful, and besides me (left side) is my ex-roommate.
After the MSM, every faculty usually will do a Family day, where it involves every first-year student. It's more like high school orientation days, where they introduce you to this and that. It was a good time for me, and I really enjoyed those days. I got to know so many people, play games, and just enjoy the day.
That' all for now. Oops, before that. I am expecting you guys to ask me questions like; PTPTN, yuran asrama, yuran pengajian, what are the courses you're gonna learn, where can you access all those resources. Well, I might come back again with those questions if you guys want to. So, let me know down below if you're curious about anything, even if you are not from FSMP, Okay?
till then, bye.
